Local quotas proposed for short-term holiday lets

Upcoming legislation, designed to regulate Local Lodging, is likely to include measures intended to counteract the “Disneyfication” of historic city centres. According to the current Socialist Party proposals, the imposition of quotas on a selective basis is “an admissible model” that should give a “relevant role to municipalities”. Since 2012, “AL” registrations have skyrocketed nationally from 7,533 to 58,252, a more than 7-fold jump. The increase in Lisbon during this period has been over 400%, primarily in the historic neighbourhoods.

Vancouver imposes sharp restrictions on home sharing sites

Vancouver, CA has passed new regulations banning homeowners from renting out certain kinds of property on short-term rental platforms like Airbnb as part of an attempt to cope with a shortage of long-term rentals. Owners may still rent out room individually or let their principle residence on a temporary basis when on holiday. The city will charge an annual licensing fee of C$49 (€32.80).

Airbnb abandons New York City lawsuit

Airbnb has capitulated to lawmaker demands over its operations in New York City, agreeing to drop a legal challenge against newly passed legislation. The suit disputed a recent state law calling for fines up to $7,500 for illegally listing short-term offerings on online rental platforms such as Airbnb.
